Whither Masculinity: “Man Up” or “Human Up?”

Course Goals and Objectives

  • Participants will list the two major different ways masculinity is understood.
  • Participatns will describe the three ways that masculinity is problematic.
  • Participants will recite how certain aspects of masculinity predispose boys and men to physical violence.
  • Participants will list what masculine norms lay the foundation for sexual violence.
  • Participants will describe why men have a hard time expressing (even naming) their emotions and discuss the consequences for the men themselves and others.

Syllabus/Time Outline:  60 minutes of the presentation and 30 minutes of open Q&A questions from the participants.

About the presenter:

Dr. Ronald F. Levant is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at The University of Akron; Past President of the American Psychological Association (APA) and APA Division 51, the Society for the Psychological Study of Men and Masculinities; and two-term Editor of APA Division 51’s quarterly journal, Psychology of Men & Masculinities. He is widely considered one of the key people responsible for creating the new field of the psychology of men and masculinities. He was included in the Elsevier-Stanford University data base listing the top 2 % of scientists in the world.
